What Are Local Service Ads?

Local Service Ads (LSAs) are a Google ad product built specifically for local service businesses — HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, real estate, and more. When someone in your area searches for a service you offer, your ad can appear at the very top of Google — above Google Ads, above Maps, above everything else on the page.

Unlike traditional advertising, you don't pay for clicks or impressions. You only pay when a potential customer contacts you directly through the ad — either by calling or sending a message. If they see your ad and don't reach out, it costs you nothing.

Customers contact you straight from the ad — no landing page, no form, no funnel. The call or message goes directly to your business.

💡 Good to know: As of October 2025, the Google Verified badge appears as a blue checkmark on your LSA listing. It tells customers that Google has verified your business license, insurance, and background check. This single signal builds more trust than most ads can buy.

Where LSAs Appear

Your LSA ad appears at the absolute top of Google Search — above the sponsored Google Ads results and above the organic map listings. This prime position means customers see your business before they see anything else on the page.

What Makes LSAs Different

Factor Local Service Ads Traditional Google Ads (PPC) Pricing model Pay per lead (call or message) Pay per click (regardless of outcome) Page position Top of page — above everything Below LSAs, labeled "Sponsored" Trust signal Google Verified blue checkmark badge No verification badge Targeting Service area + job type (no keywords) Keyword bidding + audience targeting Landing page Not needed — direct call/message Required — drives to your website What you control Budget, service area, job types, profile Keywords, bids, ad copy, landing pages Ranking factors Reviews, responsiveness, feedback loop Quality Score, bid amount, CTR Risk of wasted spend Lower — only pay for actual contact Higher — pay for clicks that don't convert

💡 Tip: LSA is purpose-built for home services and local businesses. PPC has its place for some strategies, but for local lead generation, LSA wins on trust, positioning, and cost efficiency.

The Four Core Features of LSAs

Pay-Per-Lead pricing. You're only charged when a customer calls or messages you through the ad. No clicks, no impressions, no wasted budget on people who didn't actually want to talk to you.

Google Verified badge. Google checks your license, insurance, and background before granting the badge. It signals to customers that they can trust your business before they ever pick up the phone.

Hyper-local targeting. Your ad only shows to customers in your service area who are searching for your specific services. You're not paying to reach people in other cities or looking for services you don't offer.

Direct contact. Customers call or message you straight from the ad — no extra steps between them and your team.
